Fatwa Against New Year’s

If you thought New Year’s celebrations were universal around the world, think again. Muslim clerics in Kyrgyzstan, a former Soviet republic, have issued a fatwa calling for a ban on New Year’s parties. The clerics believe the holiday is not related to Islam and the whole thing is just too expensive.

Brides By Force

Bride-snatching is illegal in Kyrgyzstan, but when you look at sentencing, the reality paints a far different picture. A sheep’s life is worth four times more than a young woman’s. The custom — in which single young men kidnap their bride of choice and pressure them to agree to marriage — is common in this country. This centuries-old tradition surprisingly has passionate proponents as well as harsh critics. Russia Today TV reports.
